Fireboat Comparison - Old vs New
- Christina Lake Needs A New Fire and Rescue boat to ensure reliable emergency response during medical emergencies, fire incidents, lake incidents and road closures. Following is a comparison between the existing and proposed boats.
Old Boat Limitations
- Limited response time. It currently takes the boat 60min (on a good day) to reach the end of the lake.
- Limited space for, pumps & hoses, medical gear, or to properly secure a stretcher.
- Current gas-powered pump was retrofitted to a recreational boat. Ventilation/ CO concerns when the pump is being operated.
- Capacity and space limits BCEHS response and patient removal.
- Water rescues are difficult with the deck height to the water, as well as limited space for a stretcher.
- Limited ability to reach isolated areas.
- Nighttime, low light and fog greatly limit the safe operation of the boat.
- Operator visibility is limited by boat configuration.
- Additional upgrades are cost prohibitive.
New Boat Benefits
- Faster response time. 18 – 20min loaded with gear and staff.
- Higher gunnels make it safer to transport staff, rescue equipment, medical and stretcher can be secured.
- Pump is designed for the boat and is well vented.
- Enhanced water rescue capabilities by lowering the ramp into the water.
- Landing craft it designed for easy access to shore.
- Increased visibility for the driver.
- Electronics equipment designed to operate the boat in no light or poor visibility situations.

- BC Parks
- BCEHS
- RCMP
- Search & Rescue
Christina Lake has a unique road system that can easily become isolated in an emergency. Limited road access creates a critical vulnerability.
